The “sgailc”, in the sense of the bumper taken before breakfast, is also famously referred to in the writings on the 18th century Highland travels of Dr Samuel Johnson and James Boswell.

Emblazoned on the label in crimson is the Gaelic motto "Bheir mi Sgailc mhath dhut" translating as "I'll give you a good dram of An Sgailc" or, alternatively, "I'll give you a good slap".
