The beautifully-designed flask is finely engraved with a celtic “S” form in the background. The “S” stands for the Gaelic word “sgailc” meaning “a bumper of any spirituous liquor taken before breakfast; dram; swig.”

The four lines of Gaelic text in the foreground, dividing the hip flask into four equal measures, are taken from the authoritative Dwelly Gaelic dictionary definition of the word “sgailc”:

• An sgailc-nide
• Am friochd uillinn
• An deoch chas-rùisgte
• An deoch bhleith

The Dwelly definition suggests that it was usual for a guest in a house in Gaeldom to take when he awakened:

1. An sgailc-nide; see sgailc-sheide (nide is the Genitive form of nead = nest)
2. Am friochd uillinn: the elbow dram, i.e. taken resting on the elbow
3. An deoch chas-rùisgte, presumably taken with your bare feet on the floor.
4. An deoch bhleith.  Bleith is grinding, so that this drink might have to do with mixing the whisky with oat-meal…..before he partook of food in the morning (Dwelly).

The “sgailc” is also famously referred to in the writings on the 18^th century Highland travels of Dr Samuel Johnson and James Boswell.
